The constant balancing act performed daily by mothers across the nation is seldom celebrated, often underappreciated and most notably taking its toll on unsuspecting women who have sacrificed their well-being while tending to those they hold most precious. Regardless of their age, many moms routinely abandon what they consider luxuries, like new clothing and trips to the salon, in favor of a pared down, family-centric lifestyle. But when competing in the job market women need to be at the top of their game and how they present themselves matters tremendously.
Nobody wants to tell you that you need to clean up, that your complexion looks washed out, your hair needs a decent cut and you could stand to slap on some make-up before you go out on that next job interview. But potential employers are looking for what they have always looked for… an employee who not only has the skills required to do the job, but who also positively reflects the image of the company.
In this job market, even if you are competing for a part-time job or flexible employment, you need to take a good hard look at your personal presentation. Is your clothing office-appropriate and up-to-date by 2010 standards? Is your hair stylish and freshly cut or a throwback to the first season of Married with Children? What about make-up? Moms often gradually forego makeup in their day to day lives until they can’t even remember the last time they dabbed on a little lipstick.
Here are some tips to look your best at your next interview, from Laura Gardiner, Life Style Specialist and owner of “Style Your Life”:
INTERVIEW OUTFIT: Plan ahead to have several interview outfits, with mixing and matching options, so when you return for a second or even third interview you have appropriate choices. For a formal company you should wear a well tailored, neutral-toned business suit with minimal, simple accessories. If you are wearing a skirt you need to wear hose. If you are interviewing for a more casual company, you still need to look professional, but can soften your interview outfit by wearing a knee-length dress with a jacket; or dress slacks, a blouse and a blazer.
THE POWER OF THE SHOE: Shoes are truly the soul of an outfit. Wear a freshly polished closed-toe shoe with at least a one inch heel that matches your interview outfit. Consider a discount or outlet store to purchase new interviewing shoes. It’s a good investment!
MAKEUP: Less is more, but something is better than nothing. At the minimum, you should apply mascara and a neutrally colored lipstick. If you need to freshen your look, go to a makeup counter at a department store for free expert advice on how to achieve a modern, polished appearance.
HAIR AND NAILS: How you style your hair can shape your whole image. Keep it neat and professional (stay away from your daughter’s hair clips or scrunchies!) Be sure that you spend the same amount of care on your nails as you do with your hair. If you can’t get a professional manicure, at least file your nails and apply a clear coat of polish.
PERFUME: You may wear perfume for an interview but be sure to spray lightly and wear a scent that is not too strong. You want to be remembered for your intelligence and work experience; not for the scent you left behind!
